A Short History Of The Porsche Automobile

Around 1950, the Porsche 356 was introduced to the United States by Max Hoffman, but 1948 was the year that the first automobile was introduced that had the name Porsche. But the true beginning of the Porsche story was probably in 1875, when, in a Bohemian village called Haffersrdorp, a son was born to the local tinsmith.

He was called Ferdinand Porsche, and in spite of his technical genius had not been thought to have the necessary discipline for the skills of engineering. At the age of 25 he soon began being an automobile designer, his only conventional education previously being a part-time stint as an engineering student inVienna. For being an engineer he appeared to be brilliant, but he was also temperamental and after a while moved from one leading German car manufactur to another. A dozen of the most technically significant automobiles in history were designed by Porsche. He served to produce the SSK series of Mercedes-Benz cars, one of the most revered of all time, when he worked for them.

Porsche launched an engineering consultation group, eventually known as Porsche AG, after having to leave Mercedes. He was against their engineering policies and was eventually asked to resign. He discovered a particular group that would work for him, and his principal interest was sports and racing cars. He and his group were kept very busy, and one project was developed for Steyr, which was the Austrian luxury sedan. A draft was built, but the project was finally abandoned. Their expert services were also used by Audi, then named Auto Union, who were the first car maker to develop front-wheel drive economy cars.

The V-12 engine, in addition to the V-16, that were supercharged, were developed by them for the mid-engine Grand Prix racing cars. For pretty much a decade, they dominated European auto racing, coupled with Mercedes-Benz racer. A while after that, NSU and Zundapp equally used their best-known designs. A couple of Porsche’s designs were setting up the engine at the rear, and the torsion-bar suspension patented by them. Neither company produced the layouts fast enough for Porsche, so he made a sale of the concept to the German government. The creation of his design and style eventually happened at Wolfsburg, in a manufacturing plant the building of which was supervised by Porsche. As part of his blueprints he called it the Type 60, but it became what we all know as the Volkswagen Beetle.

Throughout the last 100 years if not more the engineering firm of Porsche has created a lasting impression on the car industry. There is certainly no doubt that Porsche and his relatives have left the auto design and engineering disciplines an admirable and lasting legacy.
