He was called Ferdinand Porsche, and in spite of his technical genius had not been thought to have the necessary discipline for the skills of engineering. At the age of 25 he soon began being an automobile designer, his only conventional education previously being a part-time stint as an engineering student inVienna. He and his group were kept very busy, and one project was developed for Steyr, which was the Austrian luxury sedan. A draft was built, but the project was finally abandoned. Their expert services were also used by Audi, then named Auto Union, who were the first car maker to develop front-wheel drive economy cars.
The V-12 engine, in addition to the V-16, that were supercharged, were developed by them for the mid-engine Grand Prix racing cars. For pretty much a decade, they dominated European auto racing, coupled with Mercedes-Benz racer. A while after that, NSU and Zundapp equally used their best-known designs. A couple of Porsche’s designs were setting up the engine at the rear, and the torsion-bar suspension patented by them. Neither company produced the layouts fast enough for Porsche, so he made a sale of the concept to the German government. The creation of his design and style eventually happened at Wolfsburg, in a manufacturing plant the building of which was supervised by Porsche. As part of his blueprints he called it the Type 60, but it became what we all know as the Volkswagen Beetle.
